Following my post dated 24 February, 2010, I just happened to check Andrew Mangelsdorf's website today and discovered that my photo has been used more than once: his first magpie now has several replicas. Perhaps Andrew could have asked me if he could use my original photo again, don't you think? I hadn't realised it would become a favourite subject of his.
Il me semble qu'Andrew aurait pu me demander l'autorisation d'utiliser ma photo d'origine, non ?
All photos and text copyright. Please read, it's a fun story: several weeks ago I received an email from Australian artist Andrew Mangelsdorf asking me for permission to use the photo of a magpie which I'd published on my blog here. Andrew wanted to use it as the base design for a mixed media artwork he was planning to do. I agreed and yesterday Andrew wrote back sending me a photo of the final artwork. Check it out!
<span style="color: rgb(51 , 51 , 153); font-family: "georgia"; font-size: 100%;">Hi Nathalie,
<span style="color: rgb(51 , 51 , 153); font-family: "georgia"; font-size: 100%;">I have finally finished the artwork featuring your great Magpie. Its dimensions are 102 x 102 cm and it's titled 'Urban wrapper' which is a play on words really: I mixed two great Australian icons together with the use of the great Chiko Roll fast food wrapper that you may remember from your time in Australia and of course the Australian Magpie. Every now and then you see a chiko wrapper blowing around the streets and beaches, sometimes you'll catch the two together - the maggie standing amongst a background of iconic TXT and wrappers, the constrasting effect is very cool and seems so Australian. Just so you know what you're looking at here's a description of the materials - it's very hard to tell from a jpeg image. The main body of the Magpie is laminated carbon fiber with a teak eye. The wing section and beak are enamel painted perspex. The bold text areas are perspex and the hundreds of chiko wrappers are mounted onto plywood and glazed with epoxy resin - it's like glass. The shadow is painted pegboard or shadow board. The whole thing probably weighs as much as 10 kilograms. I hope you like it as much as I do. Cheers, Andrew.

The link to Andrew's website is here : Andrew Mangelsdorf . He says he hasn't posted any of his recent 'Pop composite' work yet but will do so once the upcoming exhibition is in full swing. So - what do you think of my magpie's transformation ? Isn't it fun ? While this post has nothing to do with Avignon, it is relevant to blogging and I did want to share with you the amazing adventures that blogging may lead to.
Note: what's so special about the Australian magpie? Her song! listen to it here .

Its famous Opera House of course, and the Harbour Bridge. Today is Theme Day for over 130 City Daily Photo bloggers around the world, and the theme is "what your city is known for" so here's a photo I never had the time to show before, taken at sunset on a very dramatic winter day. The stripes you see on the roof are shadows of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Pretty spectacular, eh?
Noisy, not the most attractive of all streets, a bit of reality check after my dream world of art and reflections! Peter, the name Woolloomooloo is derived from the local Aboriginal language, but it is uncertain whether it means 'place of plenty' , 'young kangaroo' or 'burial ground' (more about it here) - this shows how little we know about the Indigenous languages, many of which are lost forever : Indigenous people died in such large numbers in the years following the invasion of their land by the first settlers that their languages disappeared with them before they had time to be properly recorded. The history of the Indigenous people of Australia has many dark chapters...

There was white frost on my car, something I had never never seen before in the six years I've lived here. Sydney homes are generally poorly insulated and most have no heating apart from the occasional portable electric heater. Of course the days are often warm and sunny but as soon as the sun sets, nights are cold and I've heard many European women (used to harsher winters but also to central heating) complain about how cold it is inside the houses here - why is it that women always feel the cold more than men?

Winter storm on the coast between Tamarama beach and Bronte.

bb

All photos and text copyright. This is where, come winter, they go skiing. And winter is NOW! North hemisphere dwellers, adjust your settings: here downunder, ski season is July-August. The season is short because the aptly named Snowy Mountains aren't very high: the tallest peak, Mt Kosciusko, culminates at 2228 metres or 7310 feet. But a five hour drive from Sydney, the twin resorts of Perisher Blue (today's pictures) and Thredbo let snow riding enthusiasts have some fun! If you leave Sydney on Friday after work you can get there by midnight and have two full days of fun in the snow before driving back, getting home around midnight again. Exhausting but exhilarating!

What is it with girls and pink? Dresses, pyjamas, slippers and shorts, hot pink seems inescapable for girls here. Is it the same where you live ? Anyway, isn't it nice that the water here is clean enough for kids to play by the beach right in the middle of Sydney Harbour? By the way can you see the white wings of the Sydney Opera House in the background, flash lit by a quick ray of sunshine? I have to confess this photo is several weeks old. Now in winter the sea is cold and few kids play in the water.

After the site of the original head store was redeveloped in 1929 it became one of the most prominent and famous department stores in Sydney. I went in there several times, its several floors were a fascinating place to browse through. After 2001 Gowings embarked on an ambitious expansion plan, opening four more Gowings stores in other locations in Sydney. Although successful in the City, their locations in suburbans areas failed to attract customers. In November 2005, after three years of successive losses, the company entered administration. Attempts to sell the business were unsuccessful and the last remaining Gowings store, the one located in George Street, closed its doors on 29 January 2006. Its former competitor Lowes now occupies the building. Life and death of a business, this ad is all that remains...
bb

Sixties ? Seventies ? It's in bad condition and I couldn't find any information about it, so I'll comment it freely. The woman on the right, tied to her typewriter (no, a sewing machine, thanks Alice!) in front of an ugly grey building seems to personify alienation at work, while her counterpart to the left, all smile among a flight of white doves, appears to represent the liberation of women. Hopefully there's a move from one to the other... at least that's the way I see it. Would you interpret it differently? Either way, the fitness addict passing in front of it seems baffled!

An exceptional location around stunning beaches and a protected harbour, a mild subtropical climate, friendly people and a relaxed lifestyle, it's hard not to fall in love with Sydney. Because today is another rainy day, I pulled out photo from the vault. Very much a cliché I agree, but how can I celebrate this city without showing off once again one of the true architectural wonders of this world, the Opera House?
Using 300 posts as a significant landmark, I have decided that today I will quit daily posting - too time consuming, and I'm sure all of you who have embarked on a daily photo commitment can relate to that. SDS is not closing down, you will still be getting seven photos a week, but instead of daily they will come in groups, probably three or four at a time.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your continued support and appreciation. Being part of the city DP community has been such a rewarding (and somewhat addictive) experience that's been really hard to decide to give up. But stay tuned, the adventure isn't over yet - next post on Thursday.

All photos and text copyright. Both took place at the Domain, a large park in the city. I went over on Friday afternoon. Despite the rain (not very hard but steady) a sea of umbrellas flocked to the scene. Unfortunately I'd left mine at home and after half an hour of standing in a growing puddle, the weather got the better of me and I left. Call me far from enlightened : the power of the mind was not strong enough to make me forget my wet and cold body ! I'm glad I went anyway - the words I heard found resonance in me: Peace in the world goes hand in hand with inner peace. The rain continued all day today.
bb

All photos and text copyright. Today's theme : The trip of my dreams. What would your dream travel be, dear distant friends? Exotic, sunny, active, relaxing ?
I personally don't have a dream destination: there are so many places I'd be delighted to discover!
But I know how I'd like to travel :
1. I'd head mainly for nature - after a few days in the city, I feel trapped.
2. I'd do a lot on foot - the best speed to open up to what's around me
3. I'd share the adventure - great moments are best lived with loved ones
4. I'd listen to the stories of the locals - elders, women, children. I'd learn about their lives.
5. I'd take my time - time is an important component of travel. Time to become detached, time to become attached.
6. One magic talent: I would be able to speak and understand every language.

But in the end, the travel I really dream of is the one I would offer to people who have never had a chance to leave home. The journey of discovery that opens you up to the world, makes you drop your narrow beliefs, generates questioning beyond anything you'd ever imagined. The journey that empowers you and leads to caring and sharing beyond your immediate community. The journey to freedom and fraternity. If you are reading me today, you have probably already embarked on this journey. Peace be with you.

------

bb

All photos and text copyright. Rainy, coldm you can tell winter's coming. I feel like curling up by a log fire with a good book and a cup of tea. Unfortunately few homes in Sydney are heated or have a fireplace but the cup of tea is easy to make. Bushells tea is a local brand steeped in Australian history, it existed before the Federation (1901). Old Bushells tea ads, tins or posters make collectible memorabilia that now sell on E-Bay. This mural, which I found in Essex Street in the historic quarter of The Rocks, seems freshly repainted. I wonder if there was an original ad here a long time ago?
Note for non English native speakers: a cuppa is a cup of tea.

Quel temps de chien aujourd'hui ! Froid, pluvieux, on sent arriver l'hiver.
bb

All photos and text copyright. Is it Napoleon? And if not him, then who? I'd love to know but even my friend Norman who knows Sydney inside out couldn't find anything about him. A Hermes sign placed next to it increases the sense of French connection. Strange...
(note: this is not the Napoleon Bonaparte Sally showed you a couple of weeks ago)

Can you see him up there?
