If I had a magic wand

Round the corner from my office I found a magic wand hovering between water and sky. Of course I seized it. If you found a magic wand, what would you do with it?

A world of illusions

Illusion: Sydney by night, Darling Harbour waterfront.
Reality: Midafternoon in a back street in the city.
This large scale photo is posted on a fence. Behind it, a new building soon will sprout. See what a bit of cropping and a little help from my friend Picasa can do? A nice game to play on a rainy Sunday morning - and a good chance to reflect on the world around us: how much of what we take for true is just what a bunch of clever marketers want us to see?
PS - note on the far right of the bottom shot the pedestrian crossing sign which obviously inspired yesterday's 'legs' sculpture.

Réalité : une petite rue du centre ville en fin d'après-midi.
Cette photo habille une palissade derrière laquelle un nouvel immeuble se construit. Voilà ce qu'on peut réaliser en jouant avec un logiciel de photo : recouper par ci, modifier la lumière par là, c'est l'occasion de s'amuser le dimanche matin quand il pleut... et peut-être aussi au passage de réfléchir au monde qui nous entoure : combien de ce que nous tenons pour vrai n'est que le reflet de ce que de brillants spécialistes du marketing veulent bien nous montrer ?
PS - noter à droite le panneau "passage pour piétons" qui a manifestement inspiré la sculpture des "jambes" d'hier.

Shopping for a new nest

Darling harbour, late afternoon. This ibis is delighted: it has found a ready-made nest just his size, which comes complete with food provisions inside - what a great find! Ibises are very common in Sydney, where they feed off the garbage bins, competing with the seagulls - by the way have a look at the angry one in the bottom right, who'd been kicked out of the place: it was screaching ferociously!

Darling Harbour, fin d'après-midi. Cet ibis est ravi, il vient de se trouver un nouveau nid juste à sa taille avec tout plein de provisions à l'intérieur. Belle trouvaille ! Les ibis, nombreux à Sydney, se nourissent souvent du contenu des poubelles - faisant au passage concurrence aux mouettes. D'ailleurs regardez celle qu'on voit en bas à droite : elle s'était fait piquer sa place et criait furieusement !

Rowing at sunrise

I'm off on a walk along the water's edge at 6am when I come across these girls rowing on the bay. The two boats have just turned around in Darling Harbour and the girls are listening to their coach's instructions for the next run. Then they notice me taking pictures of them and they're delighted. We exchange a few words, we are no more than a few feet apart. They tell me they have been on the water since 5:15 this morning. I am amazed, the sun hasn't even hit the water yet! But its golden rays are already illuminating the buildings above, creating bright reflections contrasting with the blue shadows in the foreground.
