For a moment I thought it was an April fool's joke, but it's true: Sydney's beaches were closed this morning and Manly ferry services suspended following a tsunami alert caused by a powerful undersea earthquake near the Solomon islands yesterday. Read about it in the Sydney Morning Herald. The warning also covering the coast and islands of Queensland, our friends Carole and Pascale in Cairns took to the hills in a hurry this morning. They were only in for a big fright: later in the morning, NSW and Queensland were declared safe from the tsunami and the beaches reopened. Read the Brisbane Times.

Alerte au tsunami. Pendant un moment j'ai cru que c'était un poisson d'avril mais non, c'est vrai : les plages de Sydney ont été fermées ce matin et les services de ferries de Manly suspendus à cause d'une alerte au tsunami consécutive à la violente éruption d'un volcan sous-marin dans la région des îles Salomon. L'alerte concernant aussi toute la côte du Queensland, nos amies Carole et Pascale de Cairns ont quitté leur bureau en hâte ce matin pour se réfugier dans les collines; elles en ont été quittes pour une grosse frayeur.
