An unusual pet

As a rule, dogs are not allowed on Sydney beaches. However the northern end of Shelly beach is a dog beach where you can take your pet for a walk - provided you pick up after him. On Sunday I made an unusual encounter there. He is called Stinks and loves to bury his head in the sand. He was fun to watch! Want to know what animal that is ? Click here. This very active animal loves exploring, with more curiosity than common sense: he is very good at getting into holes in walls, doors, cupboards, or in or behind household appliances such as dishwashers, fans and other dangerous items which will get him into all sorts of trouble. Also this distant cousin of the polecat has a fairly strong body odor. This exclusively carnivorous animal can be quite nippy as a kit but properly trained should rarely bite the human hand, and being very playful, is (I have read) really fun to have around. Would you enjoy having one as a pet ?

Manly today

Shelly beach, Manly, this afternoon 3:30 pm.
Weather report: Fine, sunny, water temperature 20°C (68°F), air temperature 22°C (72°F).
Surf report: "Very close to dead flat, with the occasional 1 foot set every now and then. Not really surfable at all". The surf has been small for weeks and the forecast isn't optimistic : "The outlook for early next week holds no chance of any significant improvement. Flat to tiny surf is anticipated to persist through to Wednesday/ Thursday".
There were still a number of surfers trying their luck on Manly's main beach but Shelly beach here is a protected cove offering much safer swimming conditions for families with young children.

Cliff at Clovelly

Cliff at Clovelly, in Sydney's eastern suburbs. I'm afraid of heights so I could never sit on the ledge the way this girl does, could you? This picture is dedicated to Abraham of Brooksville Daily Photo, wonderful portraiturer of wildlife (if you don't know him already you MUST visit his site) who is kind enough to leave frequent comments here and who yesterday wrote: "Where I live is flat as a pancake and the only water around is what comes out of the faucets (...) and it only gets as deep as the bathtub". Here's for a change of scenery Abraham and Patty, with a smile and a hug!
By the way, today was Sydney's half marathon but alas, I didn't run it and have no photos :-(

Surf's up!

Nine months that I'm showing Sydney off and not once did I post a surfing photo. It's about time! This afternoon at Bronte beach was just divine. Although the waves weren't very big, they were nice and clean with a very light offshore breeze that kept the seas flat - just long lines of swell rising as they neared the shore - the sky a uniform blue, the air just warm... What a delightful Saturday afternoon!

Toowoon Bay clean winner

This photo was taken this morning, just a few hours ago. Magic moment: not an ounce of breeze, sea so calm it would drive a surfer nuts, and water still warm - summer isn't that far behind us.
This beach, Toowoon Bay north of Sydney, has just been named Australia's cleanest beach in the annual 2007 Keep Australia Beautiful awards. With a new modern and eco-friendly surf club, clean amenities, ample parking, mitilingual signs, a pleasant park offering playground and great picnic and barbecue facilities, Toowoon Bay performed well across all the award criteria. But on this saturday morning, fame hasn't affected my local beach, which remains delightfully quiet. Have a good weekend everyone.

Surfing and Scrapbooking

It's been a while since I've photographed a Coke ad. Here they are tackling the surf culture. Of course it's a reflection again, I love the shadow of the passer-by on the left. There's a scrapbooking shop across the street - is scrapbooking all the rage in your country too? Here it's pretty big! Have a good Sunday everyone.

Coal exports

Shelly Beach, 7:30 am. There used to be cows watching trains go by. Now there are crows watching trains of freighters go by. In fact this is not a crow, it's a magpie. The cargo ships you see lined up on the horizon are waiting to be loaded with export coal in Newcastle, two hours north of Sydney. At times there are as many as 40, 50 or 60 ships anchored out there along the coast, waiting to be loaded. The port of Newcastle is the world's largest export coal port. With coal rich and plentiful in the region and Asia's booming need for energy, coal exports are not about to stop. In fact they keep reaching new heights. Who said Global warming? Dirty word, Australia's wealth rides on mining! More info about the port of Newcastle.
bbb

Can you feel with me the pleasure of being here?
Have a good weekend everyone.

Tsunami alert

For a moment I thought it was an April fool's joke, but it's true: Sydney's beaches were closed this morning and Manly ferry services suspended following a tsunami alert caused by a powerful undersea earthquake near the Solomon islands yesterday. Read about it in the Sydney Morning Herald. The warning also covering the coast and islands of Queensland, our friends Carole and Pascale in Cairns took to the hills in a hurry this morning. They were only in for a big fright: later in the morning, NSW and Queensland were declared safe from the tsunami and the beaches reopened. Read the Brisbane Times.

She's leaving home

Just a week after her twin brother, our daughter flies away too. She's off to Paris to study. Great - except she'll be 20,000 kms away... My love, my sweetheart, my darling. When twins are born to you, do you ever think that since they arrive in pairs chances are they will also leave in pairs?
I keep singing to myself this wonderful song by the Beatles She's leaving home - very different circumstances since she leaves with our full support and deepest love, but same melancholy as she closes the door...

Falling in love

Forresters beach, north of Sydney. I fall in love with this country every time I go to the beach. Wouldn't you? I wish you could see this in real life. A photo is the second best thing, so this is what I'm treating you to. Have a good weekend.

What do you do outside blogging?

I've always had a creative mind. At various times of my life I took a keen interest in drawing, patchwork, sewing, painted furniture, collage and mixed media just to name a few. Just before going into blogging and photography, I used to collect driftwood and bits and pieces on Sydney's beaches and put them together to create "masks" such as this one. What about you? What do you do outside your Daily Photo? We talked about this with Edwin of Kuala Lumpur Daily Photo - he reckoned that if we asked we'd find out there are lots of fascinating people out there!

My Tahitian pareo

A nice project for a Saturday morning: I pick a couple of hibiscus flowers in my garden, mutiply them all over a blue sky background in a pattern that I find attractive, and there you are - I created my own Tahitian fabric. Did I ever tell you that I lived in Tahiti for six years? What a magic place, our twins were born there... Back to my project: I then cut a 6-foot length of my fabric, wrap it around my hips... wow, what do you think of my new pareo? Now I'm off to the beach. See you!

Gone rowing

Sunday morning is the day surfboats go out on training. Four girls in a boat row out into the surf, turn around a buoy and come back as fast as they can, surfing on the waves. As soon as they hit the sand, they push the boat out to sea again and have another round. How's that for fitness! Sometimes they also row way out at sea. Today the boat was nowhere in sight; all that was left on the beach was the tractor, trailer and a few spare oars...

Don't you dare touch me!

In summer, tiny yellow crabs like this one are very common on the beach. You can guess from the sand grains that they're no more than a centimetre long. I managed to step in front of this little fellow before he had time to disappear in its hole. He then tried to escape sideways, all little legs fiddling left and right at high speed until, exhausted, he finally lost hope and faced me defiantly, awaiting his fate - which turned out to be no more than a click and a goodbye. Thanks, mate! - Pheew!
PS - see his Peruvian cousin here!

- Ouf !
PS - voyez son cousin péruvien ici !

Fish is good for you

My good friend Patrick is a mad fisherman, and his grandson Cooper loves his Poppa's fish!
And now for yesterday's answer: What were our friends doing? Playing "boules" or petanque: see the comments section for details about the rules (both today and yesterday's photos by my friend Patrick Smith).

What are they doing ?

Look carefully at these silhouettes. What an amazing collection of profiles and characters! What do you think they are looking at? You will know tomorrow...

Nippers

Throughout the summer season, Sunday mornings at the beach are devoted to Nippers. Through a range of activities, children familiarise themselves with the powerful surf and practice swimming and surf life saving. Every beach has its own club and they compete against each other. At Shelly Beach, the club colours are yellow, bright blue and maroon - even in my drunken moments I couldn't have come up with such a combination, but under the bright sun, anything works! See here the other clubs' colours.
BTW each Nippers age group is supervised by three Age Managers - does that change your view on yesterday's post?

Age Manager ?

What does an Age Manager do? Help you manage your old age? Should I hire one? This one is a handsome man, and I love his panama hat and crisp white cotton shirt! I'll take a lesson from him: firstly, look after yourself!

Picture perfect

Doesn't this look like a perfect postcard paradise? The seagulls fly away before the family strolling along the beach. It's the sand bank at the mouth of Tuggerah lake inlet. I'm standing across the channel on the south shore. Behind me, the booming seaside resort of The Entrance sees new 12-storey buildings sprouting everywhere. This area is one of the fastest growing along the coast of NSW. But facing this way, you wouldn't know... As they say, never look back.

On rêve...
