The journey of my dreams

15 June is a Theme day for a bunch of French bloggers. Today's theme : The trip of my dreams. What would your dream travel be, dear distant friends? Exotic, sunny, active, relaxing ?
I personally don't have a dream destination: there are so many places I'd be delighted to discover!
But I know how I'd like to travel :
1. I'd head mainly for nature - after a few days in the city, I feel trapped.
2. I'd do a lot on foot - the best speed to open up to what's around me
3. I'd share the adventure - great moments are best lived with loved ones
4. I'd listen to the stories of the locals - elders, women, children. I'd learn about their lives.
5. I'd take my time - time is an important component of travel. Time to become detached, time to become attached.
6. One magic talent: I would be able to speak and understand every language.

But in the end, the travel I really dream of is the one I would offer to people who have never had a chance to leave home. The journey of discovery that opens you up to the world, makes you drop your narrow beliefs, generates questioning beyond anything you'd ever imagined. The journey that empowers you and leads to caring and sharing beyond your immediate community. The journey to freedom and fraternity. If you are reading me today, you have probably already embarked on this journey. Peace be with you.

From my balcony

June 1st Theme Day is View from your bedroom. I took this photo from my balcony on the fifth floor a few months ago. There had been a huge storm all afternoon with deep black skies and driving rain but just before the end of the day the sun pulled out of nowhere and striked an incredible flash of gold - I grabbed my camera and rushed out to the balcony, bingo ! This building, a 4 star hotel - the Four Points by Sheraton Darling Harbour - is usually a sparkling white but on that day it turned to gold! Neither contrast or saturation were pushed on this photo, it's all nature's work.
PS - Can you spot my magic wand in the scenery?

L'immeuble voisin, normalement d'un blanc éblouissant, a tourné à l'or pendant quelques minutes.

Wedding

Yesterday, 5 pm, on the jetty at Long Jetty. The weather was balmy, calm, beautiful - perfect day for a wedding. Do you remember your own wedding photos? Or if you're not married, how do you imagine them? For girls who are interested, the 'in' wedding gown here in Sydney has to be of the strapless bustier type. And planning for the 'big day' seems phenomenally important - more so than selecting the spouse or working on the marriage, say some.
b
BTW - today is the second round of the French presidential elections. The French will decide who they will be married to for the next five years... For us in Sydney, the result will be announced at 4 am on Monday.

Happy birthday, dear old bridge

Big celebrations today, the Sydney Harbour Bridge is 75 years old. No extravagant fireworks on the agenda but a truly exceptional feature: the bridge will be closed to traffic all day and fully open to pedestrians. People had to register online to take the walk, in a compulsory southbound direction only and in waves departing every half-hour from 10 am to 7:30 pm. The response has been overwhelming and the bridge will be packed all day. Unfortunately the weather is grey and rainy today, offering little chance to take outstanding photos. This one was taken a while ago on a particularly spectacular sunset. It was an exhilarating experience !

Moody

Rainy and moody day today. Eighteen years ago my baby boy looked very much like this. Today he's leaving home and flying overseas to a new life. I'm pleased about it but it's a page turned in the family album. And then another thing. Many of you know Ruth of East Lansing for her fantastic photos in Flying-my-expressions. In her other blog, Synchronizing (you must read the subheading), she pays tribute to a man she admires, Robert Busby. He was beaten to death last week. If you have the time, read her words and go see his picture. Both are very moving.

Scary movie

I'll add something to my Six Weird Things list (see yesterday's post) : I can't handle scary movies. I never saw the end of Hitchcock's The Birds, never even contemplated watching Chainsaw massacre or The silence of the Lambs. I've declared the war on terror. By my kids' standards, I'm a hopeless Sissy.
(Photo: Jumping castle at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic School fete in my street. I had nightmares for weeks after that LOL)

Je refuse de me laisser angoisser. Mes enfants rigolent.

Friday train ride home

Last Friday train ride home
Hot tired afternoon
Hawkesbury river bridge
Glorious golden sun
Magic water views
Dusty windows scratched
SM sado-masochist?
Dirty glass hopeless try
Smiled at the result
Couldn't be better

Please click on the photo to enlarge it.

Train du vendredi soir
Je rentre à la maison
Air chaud humide collant
Pont sur la Hawkesbury
Mille reflets miroitants
Soleil d'après-midi
Vitres rayées salies
SM Sado Maso ?
Trop de poussière découragée
Mais en ouvrant l'image
Sourire du Petit Prince
Il dit c'est tout à fait
Comme ça que je le voulais.

Gamble at Star City

Yesterday, afternoon storm with grey rolling clouds, lightning and rain. Had the brilliant surprise of a few minutes of crashing sunshine just before sunset. Jumped out and found a deconstructed Star City reflected in a wet window pane, emerging from the glass structure like a sparkling mirage. Star City is Sydney's largest casino.
Only those who gamble win the jackpot.

Heavy metal

Cranes and bridge, it's the same building game. When they grow up, little boys never stop playing Meccano, do they?
(view from Darling Point at sunset)

Special Edition

Thursday is market day in Bondi Junction and I had planned to take you there today but burning news prompted me to amend the programme. The sunset was so spectacular last night I just had to show it to you. So there it is, sunset over my neighbour's roof, photo taken from our driveway. The colours are absolutely natural, no artificial boosting... aren't they indecent?
