When you think of Sydney, what is the first image that comes to your mind? Its famous Opera House of course, and the Harbour Bridge. Today is Theme Day for over 130 City Daily Photo bloggers around the world, and the theme is "what your city is known for" so here's a photo I never had the time to show before, taken at sunset on a very dramatic winter day. The stripes you see on the roof are shadows of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Pretty spectacular, eh?

Aujourd'hui 1er du mois est jour à thème pour plus de 130 de bloggeurs du réseau City Daily Photo et le thème est "ce qui fait la réputation de votre ville" - alors voici une photo que je n'avais jamais eu l'occasion de montrer avant, prise au coucher du soleil par un jour de tempête hivernale. Les stries sur les voiles de l'Opéra, ce sont les ombres du Pont de Sydney. C'est beau, hein ?----------

For Alice

On my way to Manly yesterday afternoon I stopped here in Mosman. Isn't Sydney harbour beautiful? Suddenly it reminded me of the southern coast of Brittany in France, a unique region where land and sea meet in an intricate and beautiful pattern of islands, gulfs and rias. I sailed extensively along that coast as a youngster and left a piece of my heart there. Alice of Arradon Daily Photo lives there and I really enjoy my regular visits to her site. Precisely yesterday Alice posted this view: can you see the similarities? All right, the coast is higher here and there are no gum trees over there, but still: this one's to you Alice, with love!

En route vers Manly hier après-midi, je me suis arrêtée à Mosman pour admirer la vue sur la baie de Sydney. N'est-ce pas magnifique ? Soudain ce paysage de voiliers au mouillage dans une ria paisible m'a fait penser à la Bretagne sud et au golfe du Morbihan, une région où j'ai beaucoup navigué et que j'adore. Alice nous en envoie des images quotidiennes sur Arradon Daily Photo et c'est toujours un plaisir pour moi de lui rendre visite. Et précisément hier Alice nous a montré ce paysage. Y voyez-vous des ressemblances ? C'est vrai, la côte est plus haute ici et il n'y a pas d'eucalyptus là-bas, mais quand même Alice je te dédie cette photo, avec une bise !

Fog lifting

It's raining today so rather than showing you the grey and wet Sydney, I'll follow up on yesterday's post. This is Circular Quay at the moment the fog just started to lift. The ferries (faint yellow spots at the foot of the buildings) were still grounded but just about to set out. Beautiful moment.

Il pleut aujourd'hui alors plutot que de vous montrer Sydney gris et mouillé, je m'étends sur le brouillard d'hier. Voici Circular Quay, le quai des ferries, juste au moment où la brume a commencé à se lever. Les ferries, petites taches jaune pâle au pied des immeubles, sont toujours consignés à quai mais ne vont pas tarder à s'élancer. Joli moment.

Fog this morning

Heavy fog over Sydney Harbour this morning, your faithful reporter was there. The bottom shots were taken around 8 am when the fog was so thick there was nothing much to see, the top one much later when it had almost cleared up. All ferry services were suspended until 9 am, think of the mess for the thousands of commuters who use the ferry every day. What you're missing here is the sound, the fog horn mooing at the foot of the bridge - eerie!


Ce matin la baie de Sydney était noyée sous un épais brouillard. Votre fidèle reporter vous en rapporte des images mais il vous manque la bande son, la corne de brume beuglant au pied du pont - fantomatique !
Les photos du bas ont été prises à 8h quand la brume était si épaisse qu'il n'y avait quasiment rien à voir... le cliché du haut beaucoup plus tard, à 9h, quand les bateaux ont pu recommencer à circuler. Toutes les rotations de ferries ont été suspendues jusqu'à 9h, il y a dû y avoir du monde en retard au travail ce matin !

A night at the zoo?

Look at this little ferry arriving at Taronga Zoo, isn't it cute ? The zoo has gorgeous views over the harbour and it's only a 12-mn ride from the city. Here you will be able to pat koalas and kangaroos, and also take a photo of a giraffe with the Sydney Opera House in the background! One of the most exciting programs run by the zoo is called Roar and Snore and involves spending the night at the zoo, camping. You will see all the nocturnal animals in action and then rise to the warbles, rumbles, squeaks, growls and roars of the animals greeting the day. Tempted ?

Il est pas mignon mon petit ferry arrivant à Taronga Zoo ? Ce zoo occupe un site exceptionel au bord de la baie en face de la city. Le meilleur moyen de s'y rendre c'est en ferry, 12 minutes depuis Circular Quay. Vous pourrez y caresser des koalas et des kangourous mais aussi y faire d'amusantes photos de girafes avec l'Opéra de Sydney en toile de fond. Parmi les activités proposées, l'une des plus surprenantes s'appelle Roar and Snore : on vous invite à passer la nuit au zoo, en camping. Le soir vous voyez s'animer tous les animaux nocturnes et le lendemain vous vous réveillez au son des cris, grognements, barissements et rugissements des animaux à l'aube. Ca vous tente ?

Down the gully

Among Sydney harbour's numerous beaches, many have discreet accesses along paths and steps going down deep shaded gullies. Huge fig trees, fern trees, palms, vines and wild seeds of all sorts grow there in total freedom. I love these tiny wilderness capsules. I captured this bright green branch against a dark wall in one of them, in Mosman.

Parmi les nombreuses plages de la baie de Sydney, certaines ont des accès connus des seuls initiés. On y descend par des sentiers et des escaliers discrets qui suivent les anciens ruisseaux qui descendaient vers la mer. Dans ces vallons humides, les ficus géants, fougères arborescentes, palmes, lianes et graines diverses s'épanouissent librement. C'est dans une de ces petites bulles sauvages, dans le quartier de Mosman, que j'ai saisi contre un mur sombre cette branche habillée de lumière.

Australia Day!

Bradleys head

The 26th of January, Australia Day, is with 26th December (start of the Sydney to Hobart race) one of the two days when everything that floats meets in Sydney Harbour. This morning, the big event was the ferry parade: It was followed by hundreds of boats and thousands of spectactors massed along the shores. I viewed it from Bradley's Head, a spectacular vantage point. You're invited to come and share the fun with me!

Le 26 janvier (Australia Day, fête nationale australienne) est avec le 26 décembre (départ de la course Sydney-Hobart) l'un des deux jours de l'année où tout ce qui flotte à Sydney se retrouve sur l'eau. Ce matin, la parade des ferries décorés de banderoles était comme chaque année un événement spectaculaire suivi par des centaines de bateaux et des milliers de spectacteurs massés à terre. Je l'ai admirée depuis Bradleys Head, je vous invite à partager le spectacle avec moi !

The Statendam is back

I've shown you the MS Statendam before, on 16 November. This beautiful cruise ship is back and today she departs again on a New Zealand cruise. See how enormous she looks compared to one of Sydney's largest ferries! Actually there's something very special about this ferry : it is completely symetrical bow and aft which means it can move forwards or backwards indifferently. It will nose into its dock (no need to reverse), then leave straight out facing the other direction. This makes manoeuvering very easy and saves considerable time. Isn't that amazing?

Je vous ai déja montré le MS Statendam le 16 novembre dernier. Ce magnifique paquebot est de retour. Il repart aujourd'hui pour une croisière en Nouvelle-Zélande. Regardez comme il est imposant à côté de ce ferry, pourtant l'un des plus grands de Sydney ! D'ailleurs, ces ferries ont une particularité amusante : l'avant et l'arrière sont parfaitement symétriques avec deux cabines de pilotage identiques, ce qui fait que le bateau peut avancer indifféremment dans un sens ou dans l'autre. Il accoste nez devant et repart directement dans l'autre sens en marche avant. Cela simplifie les manoeuvres et fait gagner beaucoup de temps. Epatant, non ?

Farewell Sydney

This is the Copenhagen Ice Cream shop in the Rocks. Can you smell the chocolate coated waffle cones on the counter? Hmmmm, I wish I could add scents to this blog!
I also love the clever mural at the back - a great mix of cartoon and old photo. Isn't this the perfect way to say goodbye? I'm flying off to France today. Global warming permitting, my family and I will have a white Christmas in the Alps. But SDS will not stop: with a little help from my faithful friend Olivier of Evry Daily Photo (thanks Olivier !) you will continue to see a new photo here every day. And what have I got in store for you! Stay tuned and come back, I believe you'll enjoy what you see. But please excuse me if I don't visit your blogs during this time, I won't have access to internet over the holiday period.

Voici le magasin de glaces Copenhagen dans le quartier des Rocks. Sentez-vous l'odeur des cornets en gaufre tout juste faits et recouverts de chocolat ? Mmmmm, j'aimerais tellement pouvoir ajouter des parfums à ce blog !
J'adore la photo du fond du magasin, un astucieux montage de photo ancienne et de BD. N'est-ce pas l'image idéale pour dire au revoir ? Je m'envole demain pour la France . Si le réchauffement de la planète le permet, nous aurons un Noël sous la neige dans les Alpes. Mais je n'abandonne pas SDS !
