No ice cream? That's annoying!

Today 1st February is a Theme Day for city bloggers around the world and this time the theme is What annoys you most in your city. Well what really annoyed me in Sydney was the day we got such a dreadful heat wave that even the ice-cream truck started to melt. OK it only happened once last year, but I found it sooo annoying not to have access to a refreshing ice-cream when it was so hot! Besides, it was really disgusting to see all that plastic and ice-cream melting together on the beach; yuk! And it took weeks before the council finally removed the mess!

Aujourd'hui 1er février est un jour à thème pour les bloggeurs de City Daily Photo et cette fois-ci le thème est : Ce qui vous énerve le plus dans votre ville.
Eh bien moi ce que j'ai trouvé le plus pénible à Sydney c'était le jour où on a eu une telle canicule que même le camion du marchand de glaces a fondu. Ce n'est arrivé qu'une fois c'est vrai mais par cette chaleur, ne pas avoir accès à une glace bien fraîche, c'était insupportable ! En plus, tout ce plastique fondu mélangé à la glace dégoulinant sur la plage, c'était dégoûtant. Et les services de la mairie ont mis des semaines à tout enlever !

Too good to be true!

Legs only, part two.
If you follow this blog, you will have guessed that this is part of Sculpture by the Sea. When I saw this pair of legs on Tamarama beach, I couldn't believe it: The Theme was served to me on a silver platter!!! But then I have a contradictory mind and I hate it when things are made too easy, so... you got Macbeth's shadow instead. These legs are huge by the way, taller than me and made of rusty iron.

"Seulement les jambes", deuxième partie.
Si vous avez suivi les épisodes précédents, vous aurez deviné qu'il s'agit de Sculpture by the Sea. Quand j'ai vu cette paire de jambes sur la plage de Tamarama, j'ai pensé à un cadeau du ciel : le Thème du Mois m'était servi tout cuit sur un plateau d'argent ! Seulement j'ai l'esprit de contradiction et je n'aime pas la facilité, alors hier j'ai préféré vous servir l'ombre de Macbeth... et réserver cette sculpture pour aujourd'hui. Ces jambes sont assez monumentales, plus hautes que moi, en fer rouillé.

Sculpture by the sea, encore

On this Sunday, my steps bring me back to Sculpture by the Sea, for my pleasure and yours too I hope. These two photos were taken shortly after sunrise, a wonderful time of solitude before the crowds arrive.
These artworks are both abstract but very different: one is shiny metal, the other is stone. Today again I'll give you the choice: which one do you prefer?

Ce dimanche me ramène à Sculpture by the Sea, pour mon plaisir et j'espère aussi pour le vôtre. J'ai pris ceux deux photos peu après le lever du soleil, à un merveilleux moment de solitude avant l'arrivée de la foule.
L'une de métal poli, l'autre de pierre mais toutes deux abstraites, voilà deux oeuvres bien différentes. Aujourd'hui encore je vous donne le choix : laquelle préférez-vous ?

Children lost in the desert

Two poor children lost in the desert; they walked and walked and couldn't find their way...
Yes, this is Sculpture by the Sea again (see two previous posts). I hope you enjoy contemporary art because I personally find it hard to move away from such an inspiring subject. The exhibition is set not only along the coastal walk south of Bondi but also on Tamarama beach itself. This photo was taken early morning after the gale had blown all night. On the sand wiped flat by the wind, just a few new footsteps...

Oui, c'est encore Sculpture by the Sea (voir journées précédentes). J'espère que vous appréciez l'art contemporain car moi j'ai du mal à quitter un sujet aussi riche d'inspiration. L'exposition se tient non seulement sur le sentier côtier au sud de Bondi mais aussi sur la plage même de Tamarama. J'ai pris cette photo tôt le lendemain matin, après que la tempête eût soufflé toute la nuit. Le vent avait balayé le sable et sur cette surface lisse, juste quelques nouvelles traces de pas...

Sculpture by the Sea, continued

There were so many interesting pieces at Sculpture by the Sea, here are two more. I can't give you the names of these artworks or their author because I don't have the exhibition catalogue. It is usually available for free at information booths along the way but because it was so late afternoon and frightfully cold and windy, the booths were unmanned. You will be left to your own devices to appreciate these sculptures as you see them, no prejudice attached. What I personally like is that both convey a sense of movement perfectly atuned to the environment. Do these sculptures speak to you? Which one do you prefer?

Il y avait tant d'oeuvres intéressantes à Sculpture by the Sea, en voici deux autres. Malheureusement je ne peux pas vous donner les titres ni les auteurs, je n'ai pas le catalogue de l'exposition. Il est d'habitude disponible gratuitement dans des kioskes le long du parcours, mais il était si tard le soir (20h) et le vent était si glacial que le personnel avait disparu. Je vous laisse donc apprécier ces oeuvres telles quelles, sans idées préconçues et sans discours conceptuel. Ce que j'aime dans ces deux oeuvres, c'est l'expression du mouvement particulièrement adaptée à l'environnement. Et vous, est-ce aue ces sculptures vous parlent ? Laquelle préférez-vous ?

Sculpture and gale by the sea

For me, one of Sydney's most exciting annual visual arts events in Sydney is Sculpture by the Sea, an exhibition of contemporary art along the spectacular coastal walk from Bondi Beach to Tamarama. I've been dying to go since its opening on 2nd November but the weather has been quite consistently bad. I was finally able to go on Thursday at sunset and... what a show! The light was spectacular and with a gale warning on, the seas came crashing on the rocks below, sending sea spray right up the cliff. The gusts were so violent I had trouble just standing there. But what the photos fail to convey is the noise : the waves, the wind and most of all the rattling of those hundreds of little fiberglass squares attached to the metallic core of the "tree". An amazing experience really!

S'il est un événement que j'attends chaque année avec impatience, c'est bien Sculpture by the Sea, une expo d'art contemporain qui se tient le long du sentier côtier entre les plages de Bondi et de Tamarama. Voir des oeuvres d'art moderne dans ce cadre naturel est toujours pour moi une source d'émerveillement. L'expo a ouvert le 2 novembre mais à chaque fois que j'espérais y aller il a fait mauvais. J'ai enfin pu aller y faire un tour jeudi au coucher du soleil. Quel régal ! Il y avait un avis de tempête, la mer démontée envoyait des embruns jusqu'au sommet de la falaise et j'avais du mal à tenir debout tellement le vent était violent - et avec ça, une lumière somptueuse ! Mais ce que les photos ne rendent pas, c'est le bruit : le vent, le fracas des vagues et surtout le cliquetis frénétique de toutes ces petits carrés en plexiglass s'entrechoquant. Spectaculaire !
