Tsunami alert

For a moment I thought it was an April fool's joke, but it's true: Sydney's beaches were closed this morning and Manly ferry services suspended following a tsunami alert caused by a powerful undersea earthquake near the Solomon islands yesterday. Read about it in the Sydney Morning Herald. The warning also covering the coast and islands of Queensland, our friends Carole and Pascale in Cairns took to the hills in a hurry this morning. They were only in for a big fright: later in the morning, NSW and Queensland were declared safe from the tsunami and the beaches reopened. Read the Brisbane Times.

My friend called and said there was an earthquake in California. I started looking for information in the news. It was an April Fool's joke.

But then there was really an earthquake at the Solomon Islands.
Not so funny now. :-(

The sea can be so incredibly beautiful-like that shown in your photo-and yet so powerfully destructive.
Thank goodness your part of the world is safe!

I've been hearing about it on CNN--and, it must be very frightening in light of recent events a few years ago. The beauty exacts its price sometimes.

tsunamis cause such devastation, Im glad people are heeding the warnings - i think one person is missing in the Soloman islands.

I was hoping you and those in our blog world near you were okay. I'm glad people are taking the warnings seriously.
Thanks for your update.

N, it's taken me a while to reach round to you from Richmond upon Thames. Tks for showing this photo and for your comments on it. It's a fine photo and an interesting comment on the current news from the Solomons which I heard only this morning on the radio in UK. CDP is a good hobby!!!

I second Chris's comment. Add to it the Global Warming scare. Erratic weather and all that.

Like Kate said, beauty exacts it's price. To think I was jolly taking that coastal walk and not once did I think of it.

That a sobering thought. If the tsunami reached Sydney, would you've been safe on that hill?

Such a powerful event as a tsunami must of been a little freighting to see what was really going to happen. I am glad everything is alright.

Update the next day : The same underwater volcano in the Solomon islands has had another powerful eruption today 03 April so a new advisory might well be issued.

I live close to the beach but the coast is far from flat. There's a fair hill behind the beach and I doubt many houses in our area would be affected by a tsunami. No wave would be big enough to go over the hill. That would be true for most areas around Sydney but not absolutely all.
Manly is pretty flat...

I wonder whether Sydney authorities are prepared for such emergencies and have contingency plans?

I wondered about you when I saw the news yesterday and all those waves around Australia. Be safe!
