Bushfire chaos

Many of you have heard about the ongoing bushfires in Victoria and Tasmania in the past several weeks. But two Mondays ago the fire hit north of Sydney in the Ku-Ring-Gai-Chase National Park, effectively cutting off the Central Coast (where I live) from Sydney and causing havoc for commuters - read all about it here. No rail or road for most of the day, what a mess! I wasn't one on the thousands of commuters who were left stranded: on Mondays I work from home, lucky me! This week I stopped to have a look : the fire came right up to the freeway and Berowra train station. What's special about this area is that the highway, freeway to Brisbane and train line all run parallel over a stretch of 50km or so. All around is the forest. If it burns, all three accesses are cut off at the same time. The alternative is a 75 km detour which involves crossing a river on a cable-ferry ! I'm amazed to see how wild this country still is. And this is near Sydney!

Wild country and a wild fire. I am glad you were safe from that horrendous conflagration. Great photos of the area. thank you for the information.

I was watching Discovery just last week and they had this series of the great fire that nearly hit Sydney.

Great photos. That commute would have been dreadful! Very sad that all that bush was destroyed by the fire.

As I was reading it, I thought about you at home not having to deal with the 'traffic.'

That one day i went to Manly, a smog hovered above the city. immediately I thought someplace was on fire. Scary stuff.
