A thousand birds for you

On Wednesday nights the Art Gallery of NSW is open until 9 pm. It's called Art After Hours, I love it. Today I saw Artexpress, an exhibition of outstanding Visual Art works by High School Certificate students. This piece called A Thousand Birds For You is by Stephanie Nguyen (Bankstown Girls High School). In her own words :
"My work explores architecture through a form other than traditional buidling construction methods. My artmaking took the direction of working with white paper, folded and joined. I was drawn to the abstract shapes and forms of the 19th and 20th century architecture. The Sydney Opera House, with its organic and unusual shapes, was a strong source of inspiration. An old Japanese legend says that anyone who folds a thousand paper cranes will be granted a wish. I was strongly influenced by this idea. In my origami pieces are memories, feelings, emotions, dedication and patience… all captured in each one of them. "

I love paper art and yes, I've heard of the 1000 paper cranes legend. there was a play I wanted to do when i was younger and the character folded throughout the performance. A bit too old to play the character now BUT I'm looking for someone to direct. Thanks for reminding me of it.

I like the photo and the creativity of the student. I also love the idea of Art after Hours!!! I am trying to learn French (hard here in the middle of the US with no one to practice with!) so I'm happy to see your descriptions in both languages. i will definitely be back to see your entries! Merci!

Yes Muriel you're right, this piece has very little to do with actual architecture but it was one of my favourites because it was really striking.

Also a good number of students went down the 'trash' path which is so popular in modern art these days - often an easy way to disguise incompetence in drawing or painting. This work showed patience (a quality not so popular in this day and age where everything should come fast) dedication and a real sense of visual effect.

I would swear this piece of art is pulsating. I can quite literally almost see it moving on my screen.
Very very cool!

An amazing piece of art work you have captured. One has to have a lot of stick-to-it-ness to accomplish such a beautiful work.

Memories, maybe, dedication and patience obviously but feelings and emotions, not sure...
I've never been moved by the Japanese Origami Art. Don't ask me why...

Hi everyone, i must say it is so weird to see my artwork being put up on a website and commented on like this. My hands are shaky as i'm typing this...

Thank you for all the encouraging comments!
To BV who wondered: "... but feelings and emotions, not sure... I've never been moved by the Japanese Origami Art. Don't ask me why... ", i have written these words from the bottom of my heart.

This work means so much more than having a top mark in visual arts and having it displayed at the Art Gallery.

I've been through a lot in my last year in high school:
all these times when i would carry the papers around and fold them anytime, anywhere, that included my school library, my local library, and even during classes!

The pressure and stress of the hsc is sure to get to any student, and i certainly was not excluded.

I would have my bad days but still be folding papers to feel like I was not wasting time in being upset. I also had great days... like falling in love and being with my beautiful friends.

I understand that the words "memories, patience, dedication, feelings and emotions" can be interpreted in various ways to you all...
but that's what "A thousand birds for you" means to me:
Every single moment that I have experienced during its process.
