We abandoned daylight saving time last week. At six pm, the city plunges into the night. Tonight we'll dine by candelight.
At 7.30pm on 31st March 2007, Sydneysiders are invited to turn off their lights and electric appliances - at home and at work - for just one hour, Earth Hour, as a sign of their commitment to reduce global warming. Earth Hour is just the start of a campaign that aims to reduce Sydney's greenhouse emissions by 5% in 2007. The event will demonstrate how simple actions can make the world of difference if everyone takes part. This year's Earth Hour will happen in Sydney, but the organisers hope that Earth Hour can grow into a global campaign. Dear friends from all over the world, care to join?

Clever idea! That will send a powerful message to the world. Hope many more cities will take part. I'm very much in favour of it.
Great idea! I hope this spreads worldwide.
Brilliant! I too hope Earth Hours spreads around the world. Lord knows we need it. It'll be a much needed hour. I wish I was there to experience it. It'll be so good to only hear the pure sound of humans.
i didn't realise it was just an australian thing. i am cooking dinner!! but we are delaying it for an hour...does that count?
Beautiful evening light; I'm envious.
a great campaign. I certainly hope the world will soon follow sydney's footstep. Enjoy your candlelight evening !

That is a wonderful concept and I hope we can adopt it here in Adelaide as well. I love this photo as it is not only beautiful in it's composition, but my little grandson, William would have been only metres away when you took it. I don't think you took it from the boat club at Rushcutters. Perhaps further towards the Point?

First of all, I'd like to say that the darkened silhouette cityscape is very attractive.
I have to figure out the time difference between Mazatlan and Sydney to participate, but I think I've missed it with this post. When I return to MN on Sunday, April 9 I will contact some of my legislators to see if the same thing can be done in the USA, esp. since we suck up so much energy!!
J'adore ta photo!
I think the New York City area was supposed to do something like this in February, but it wasn't well-publicized, and it was only five minutes anyway (which doesn't do a whole lot for the environment).
Beautiful sunset skyline. :)
this is a lovely photo--all of the boats, too.
earth hour is a wonderful idea, I hope it does go around the world and spreads to longer periods of time.
m.benaut, this pic was taken much further than the yacht club at rushcutters, right at the very end of the point
All, glad you're taking interest, I just hope we all realise it's not just about an hour each year but a real commitment all year round
I ignored the event, Nathalie. On the other hand, I've also always ignored such things as air conditioning, kept water use and electricity to a minimum since I was a kid, and even in the days when I was moving in more affluent circles, made a constant popint of using as few resources as practical.
But perhaps I/m wrong, and tokenism will inspire the world's rich nations to bite the bullet.
