Hi Natahalie,
Only fly in the ointment is that lifesavers are unpaid volunteers, and therefore not at work!
Signed,
Your Tama Lifesaver.

It is a tough job that a lot of us wish we had. Actually life guards perform a valuable service and place themselves at risk to save others. Bravo for their efforts and I hope they enjoy the sun.

My kind of men at work! :)

Hey, work doesn't have to be paid to be work! Lavender lady's got a volunteer hard at work too! Housework and child rearing don't get paid either!

These fellows are worth their weight in gold for the work they do. Lovely picture, wish I could be in Sydney.

Because of Baywatch, the tv-series about life guards, everyone in the US want to be life guards. Then they realized not every female life guard looks like Pamela Anderson (pre-surgery, pre-tattoo, of course).

Did you know NYC has a shortage of life guards? Every year we hire high school students from Poland to come to here to work for the summer. Why Poland, I don't know.

good to sally admonish anon

work is work -- getting paid or not is irrelevant.

Ben Nakagawa said...

Agree, and they are very important in the busy beach like yours.

Thanks all for your very interesting comments along two lines of thought:

1/ Would it be fun to be a lifesaver? Wearing the glamourous yellow and red shirt BUT standing in the sun all day long, straining your eyes against the harsh sun, possibly being bored but worrying that you might miss the tiny bobbing head of the drowning swimmer? And suddenly rushing to help and risking your own life to save another?
Very thought provoking.

The fact that every year New York city brings in Polish lifesavers for the season is amazing

and 2/ is volunteer work still work? Our Tamarama lifesaver doesn't think so, but I would follow Sally and Gerald in arguing against that... open to further discussion !
