For over ten years between 1928 and 1938, two sistership ferries ruled Sydney Harbour: the Dee Why and the Curl Curl. They were big, fast and comfortable. However in 1938 a better ferry stole the spotlight: the South Steyne, 227 ft (70 metres) of steam power, billed as the world's largest and fastest ferry. She operated the Manly service for over 35 years, until she caught fire in 1974. Beautifully restored, she is now a floating restaurant based in Darling Harbour.
